Why old alarms beep
Keypad beeps are usually a warning, not an intrusion. The panel is telling you something needs attention.
- Flat or failing backup battery (the most common cause, especially after 3 to 5 years)
- Mains power lost at the panel or plug pack
- A zone fault or tamper, such as a damaged detector or loose cable
- Communication failure when the dialler or phone line no longer works
- Clock or system trouble after a power outage
What you can safely do yourself
Check the keypad display or trouble light and note the message. Many panels let you acknowledge a trouble condition to silence beeping. Make sure the panel has mains power. Take clear photos of the keypad and the inside label of the panel if you can see it without opening anything.
Avoid cutting wires, pulling out the battery while the siren is connected, or opening a panel you're unsure about. Sirens and backup batteries can keep an alarm sounding, and exposed cables inside walls can be a hazard.
Repair, upgrade, replace or remove?
The right choice depends on the age and brand of the panel and what you want from it.
- Repair: a new battery, detector or siren fixes most faults on a working system
- Upgrade: supported Bosch, Paradox, NESS, Honeywell and DSC panels can gain app control, push alerts and remote arming
- Replace: very old, discontinued or unreliable panels are better replaced with a modern system
- Remove: if you no longer want an alarm, a technician can decommission it safely
